Mise-en-scene Case Study Assignment - Activity #1

(Les Miserables)

The mise-en-scene in this still creates an overall feeling of drab, dirtiness, while clearly calling attention to Anne Hathaway's character. All of the women in this frame are dressed in dark colored rags which insinuates how poor they are. This is also reflected in the messy hairstyles they have and the walls around them that seem to almost be streaked with filth. The performance they are giving via facial expression is another clue to their hopelessness; they are all very annoyed and tired. We can tell that the woman in pink will be significant to the story because she is placed in the very foreground with a lighter colored dress and more put-together hair than the others.

As soon as you see this image, your eye is drawn to the bright red balloon covering Pennywise's face. The color is very symbolic of danger and alertness, almost a corruption of the standard red that would be used by regular clowns. It's placement also builds up suspense since it obscures most of his face. His makeup is iconic, so even though you can only see his mouth, you immediately know who it is. Pennywise's ruffled collar also draws attention back into his mouth/balloon by acting as a sort of frame. the background has a similar effect by being very dim and unassuming.

Being an astronaut, Sandra Bullock's character needs to have a short, functional hairstyle to keep up with her high-intensity job. Though its not very well seen here, that's the same thought process behind her wearing a plain grey tank top. The color scheme is dull and (maybe it's just me) anxiety inducing. Something about it screams "vomit" and makes me feel uneasy. A lot of the props in the back are reminiscent of military gear and that could be a nod to how crucial her task as an astronaut is. The background is also very metallic and inhuman, contributing to the lack of warmth and comfort associated with outer space.
