Foundation Portfolio Update #1
- I am going to be taking on the role of director in my group. I didn't have a very strong preference towards a specific job so I let my groupmates choose what they wanted to do most before picking mine. I'm a very organized person and I'm good at communicating. I keep track of deadlines and have a plan of action for everything, so the role of director fits me.
- My group unanimously wanted to work in the horror genre. It's something that all of us are interested in and because of its popularity, there is a lot of information on its common conventions.
- I was able to get a lot of good insight via the film opening project. Color pallets matter a lot in horror. A lot of greys and washed out earth tones. There are circumstances where the film wants to juxtapose bright colors with the story, but for the most part they usually try to create a feeling of "deadness". Typical camerawork includes not holding it steady so that the audience can feel as though they're in the world of the film. This technique gives it more reality. It's also used to create the effect of "found-footage". Lastly, music, or the lack their of, is one of the most important conventions in horror. When audiences hear eerie, high pitched string instruments, they immediately know what sort of movie they're watching. The same can go for absolute silence. Silence is only ever used in film when it is for the purpose of building tension.
